چکیده

As graphemetophoneme methods proliferate, their careful evaluation becomes increasingly important. This paper ex plores a variety of metrics to compare the automatic pronunci ation methods of three freelyavailable graphemetophoneme packages on a large dictionary. Two metrics, presented here for the first time, rely upon a novel weighted phonemic substi tution matrix constructed from substitution frequencies in a collection of trusted alternate pronunciations. These new met rics are sensitive to the degree of mutability among phonemes. An alignment tool uses this matrix to compare phoneme sub stitutions between pairs of pronunciations.

The Effect of Using Phonetic Websites on Iranian EFL Learners’ Word Level Pronunciation

Computer-assisted language learning (CALL) is reaching an up most position in the pedagogical field of English as a Second or Foreign Language (ESL/EFL). The present study was carried out to study the effect of using phonetic websites on Iranian EFL students’ pronunciation and knowledge of phonemic symbols. Participants of the study included 30 EFL female pre-intermediate students studyin...

Training novel phonemic contrasts: a comparison of identification and oddity discrimination training

High Variability Pronunciation Training (HVPT) is a highly successful alternative to ASR-based pronunciation training. It has been demonstrated that HVPT is effective in teaching the perception of non-native phonemic contrasts, and that this skill generalizes to the perception of unfamiliar words and talkers, transfers to pronunciation, and is retained long-term. HVPT is, however, not efficient...

Context-dependent pronunciation error pattern discovery with limited annotations

A Computer-Assisted Pronunciation Training (CAPT) system can provide greater benefit to language learners if it provides not only scoring but also corrective feedback. However, the process of deriving pronunciation error patterns usually requires linguistic knowledge, or large quantities of expensive, annotated, corpora from nonnative speakers. In this paper we explore the possibility of derivi...

Paradigmatic Cascades: a Linguistically Sound Model of Pronunciation by Analogy

We present and experimentally evaluate a new model of pronunciation by analogy: the paradigmatic cascades model. Given a pronunciation lexicon, this algorithm first extracts the most productive paradigmatic mappings in the graphemic domain, and pairs them statistically with their correlate(s) in the phonemic domain. These mappings are used to search and retrieve in the lexical database the most...
